Overview

What is EU AI Act ?

The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive regulation on artificial intelligence. Adopted in 2024, it establishes a regulatory framework based on AI system risk level: unacceptable risk (prohibited), high risk (strict obligations), limited risk (transparency obligations), and minimal risk (free use). High-risk AI systems must comply with requirements for risk management, data quality, technical documentation, transparency, human oversight, and robustness. The regulation applies progressively between 2025 and 2027.

Key Points

  • 4 risk levels: unacceptable (prohibited), high risk, limited risk, and minimal risk
  • Prohibited systems: generalized social scoring, exploitation of vulnerabilities, real-time remote biometric identification (with exceptions)
  • High-risk systems: risk management system, training data quality, technical documentation, logging, transparency, human oversight
  • General-purpose AI models (GPAI): transparency obligations, technical documentation, copyright compliance
  • Penalties up to 35 million euros or 7% of annual worldwide turnover
