What is eIDAS 2.0 ?
eIDAS 2.0 (electronic IDentification, Authentication and trust Services) is the revised European regulation on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions within the internal market. Version 2.0, adopted in 2024, introduces the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW), enabling every European citizen to have a digital wallet for identification, storing attribute attestations, and electronic signing. The regulation covers electronic signatures (simple, advanced, qualified), electronic seals, timestamps, registered electronic delivery services, and website authentication.
Key Points
- European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW): digital identity wallet for every European citizen
- Qualified electronic signatures with the same legal value as handwritten signatures across the EU
- Qualified Trust Service Providers (QTSP) subject to strict audits and supervision
- Electronic attestations of attributes (diplomas, licenses, professional qualifications) via the wallet
- Mandatory interoperability between member states' electronic identification schemes
